Students in this workshop will sew patchwork quilt blocks without the limitations of traditional patterns giving results that are often surprising and unexpected. No rigid patterns, templates or precision measuring here; instead, we’ll work in a loose and freeform quilting style focusing on the creative process while maintaining solid design concepts.

Our morning will focus on creating liberated patchwork blocks. In the afternoon, we’ll move on to assembling the blocks with design elements that can help create a cohesive overall quilt top.

Beginners and experienced quilters will enjoy the time in this class to quilt with freedom and intuition.

The Ohio Star quilt block is a beautiful and simple pattern. You’ll get lots of practice making half square triangles and quarter square triangles. Cutting, pressing and machine piecing are the techniques covered in class for star block construction. The skills learned here will set you up for success with future projects as well. Class is limited to 8 participants so that I can provide lots of hands on attention while you work on your project. A beautiful farm setting with a delicious lunch served at mid day!!!

The log cabin block! So many beautiful quilts have been made using this versatile patchwork of fabric strips stitched in a concentric spiral around a central square. 

In this full day class participants can expect to learn precision fabric cutting techniques using a rotary cutter, grid ruler and cutting mat. Stitching, piecing and trimming the blocks will fill the afternoon portion of class. Time will be given to experiment with traditional and improvisational patchwork designs.

This class is perfect for people who know how to use a machine but are new to quilting AND for more experienced quilters who want to build on their cutting and piecing skills.
